Opening with a burst of brass and a demonstration of sample savviness that would make Kanye West tingle with excitement, ‘Melodrama’ is a damn fine example of pop done right. As the latest single to arrive from Swedish artist and Ja Ja Ja alumni ORKID, this is a track that’s perfectly delivered and punches in all the right places.

If you weren’t there to catch ORKID when she performed at our London or Berlin club nights last year then firstly, shame on you and secondly, now’s the time to acquaint yourself with yet another Swedish Pop Idol contestant from previous years who’s destined for the big time. We’ve certainly got plenty of appetite for more Tove Styrke style pop like this, that’s for sure.

Coinciding with the release of her debut album, I Don’t Give A Damn, as a single ‘Melodrama’ confirms what previous offerings such as ‘Wasted’ and ‘Obvious’ have demonstrated – at just 21 years old, ORKID has a discerning ability to build on a great hook, fusing electronic beats, bass heavy synth and a confident vocal ability, all of which result in a walloping slice of pop. There’s not many songs out there that could get away with using the lyrics ‘we never fit in our pyjamas’ as a way to rhyme something with ‘Melodramas’, but given how good this track is, we’re going to go with it. Just wait until you’re singing along to it yourself and embrace it for the subtle sweetness it brings to a single with some otherwise darker themes. It’s one hell of a track with which to announce your debut album and undoubtedly demonstrates that ORKID is here for the long-run.

‘Melodrama’ is out now in the UK, along with I Don’t Give A Damn, both of which we can highly recommend spending a lot of time listening to. Thankfully, you can do just that below:
