‘City of Gold’ is the brand new song from Thea Raknes, aka Thea & The Wild, which represents a more upbeat vibe from the Norwegian songstress. Hot on the heels of her most recent single, ‘Dark Horse‘, showing off a more “synth heavy, pop-focussed sound” than previous releases, this effort is guaranteed to win her even more fans.

Conjuring visions of sunlight glinting off the sea on the coast of Northern Norway, where this song was recorded, ‘City of Gold’ is full of shimmering beats and sparkling chords – a joyfully uplifting track, which is just perfect for listening to while driving in the car, with the roof down and the sun beaming overhead.

That’s not to say it’s all sweetness and light. There’s a bittersweet, almost melancholy note to the lyrics, with Thea explaining the inspiration behind the song as “that moment where you know you’ve lost something you could’ve had, and you don’t really want to leave or let go, cause you’ve had that glimpse of hope and what could have been. Then again, maybe that doesn’t exist, and is just a myth.” Regardless, there’s plenty more to be appreciated here, with Raknes revealing her deftness as a lyricist, offering up gems such as “never ending never came”.

When Thea catches the high notes in the chorus, asking “How do I run? How do I stay?”, it’s a proper shivers-down-the-spine kind of moment. And that’s to say nothing of the impeccable production throughout the whole song. To put it simply, this is a triumph of a pop-song.
