The opening comment on the YouTube video for Russian Girls‘ track ‘Autopilot’ asks “Серьезно?! Русские? The video is well done, but are they really Russian?”. Well bad news internet stranger, they’re not, and they’re not even girls. Russian Girls is in fact the baby of Iceland and Fufanu‘s Guðlaugur Halldór Einarsson, along with the brothers Arnljótur and Gylfi Sigurðsson. The project have been lingering around the Reykjavík underground for a while now, and they’ve teamed up with Hamburg label hfn music to put out an EP, as part of their Sisters & Brothers release series. ‘Autopilot’ is the lead track from that collection.
The entire EP exists deep in the music twilight zone, a collection of weird sinister grooves, twitches, glitches and groans distilled into experimental art-rock. ‘Autopilot’ is probably the most direct of those tracks, stark metallic disco that leans into feral cyberpunk funk, with little sonic echoes of the music Anika made with Geoff Barrow of Portishead a few years back. Check it out below, and Sisters & Brothers Vol 2: Russian Girls is out now.
