Tune in to the Songs of Ice & Fire playlist to discover special urban highlights from the thriving Finnish Hip Hop scene!

A few weeks ago we introduced you to the Songs of Ice & Fire playlist – a special playlist focusing on Nordic urban music, showcasing the best of the local hip-hop, R’n’B, and soul scenes. As the genre is characterised by cross-collaborations, features and guest producing, the playlist is a goldmine for anyone looking to find new exciting names and interesting sounds to discover!

As in so many other places, the hip-hop scene is experiencing a powerful revival in all the Nordic countries, with street poets rediscovering their native languages as well as finding their way to international audiences through English lyrics and global themes. The Songs of Ice & Fire playlist was created to make all of this much easier for you to keep an eye on and one of the most vibrant developments can be seen in Finland, so here are a few of the latest Finnish releases to show you exactly what is going on in the north-eastern-most corner of Europe!

Cheek ft. Nikke Ankara, Elastinen, JVG & Kube, Pete Parkkonen – ‘Me ollaan ne, Part 2’

Cheek is one of Finland’s top selling artists at the moment, hailing from the city of Lahti which is sometimes called Finland’s Chicago. He teams up with Elastinen, JVG and Pete Parkkonen for the single ‘Me ollaan ne’ and can definitely be counted among the most popular artists in their genre in the country at the moment, partly because of their participation in popular TV shows, a merit they share with Pete Parkkonen, famous for his participation in the Idols talent show. The meat and potatoes of Finnish hip-hop, to be dealt out to the public in fair and equal rations.

Tommischock, Kalifornia Keke, RPK – ‘Ilmestyksiä’

If Cheek et. al. represent the mainstream and everyday, then this fresh track by Tommischock, Kalifornia Keke and RPK is the direct opposite. ‘Ilmestyksiä’ delivers karate-chops in the direction of everything that is trendy and found online, without losing its relevance in today’s urban musical environment. And it took the local scene by storm when it was released. Both Tommischock and Kalifornia Keke are familiar from the somewhat more famous hip-hop group Ruger Hauer, while producer RPK has previously showed his skills in the groups Ceebrolistics and Eurocrack. The album Rotaatio, from which the track is taken, will be available on Friday 18th March.

Biniyam, Specks – ‘Villains’

When talking Finnish hip-hop, it’s impossible not to include Biniyam who just released his long awaited debut EP The Abyssinian. ‘Villains’ is a track taken from the release, featuring vocals from up-and-coming Tampere rapper Specks. Biniyam’s musical simplicity and focus on vocals and lyrics leaves space for extremely contagious beats, layered with organic sounds from piano, organs and guitar, but never losing its ultra urban sound.

View – ‘Coldest Season’

Where should we start? Rapper View emerged from nowhere about a year and a half ago, he hasn’t stopped since and he doesn’t seem to be about to do so anytime soon either. The track ‘Avalon’ caught our attention when it was released in the autumn of 2014, and the EP with the same name was released last year. The release included the track ‘Spill’, recorded with fellow Helsinki native Noah Kin, and has been streamed over 400,000 times on Spotify since its release. We picked View as an artist to watch in 2016, and this new track, the recent news about the signing to Cargo Records, as well as a promise of an upcoming album makes us think we were right!

Tune in to more Nordic urban music in the Songs of Ice & Fire playlist!
