Last week was a particularly busy one for new Nordic music…
…Not only did we see the release of some much anticipated new Nordic tracks, but the P3 Guld Awards also took place in Gothenburg, offering up the best in new Swedish pop music!
What does this mean? Well, it means that the Trenda: New Nordic Pop playlist – where we gather all of the latest Nordic pop releases – is now packed full of fresh new Nordic hits! Let’s have a look at which tracks have arrived with a bang…
Sweden’s Maja Francis kicks off this week’s Trenda: New Nordic Pop playlist with her new single, the sparkling pop diamond ‘Come Companion’. The song, which Maja also performed live at the P3 Guld award gala in Gothenburg last Saturday, is taken from an EP with the same name, which also includes the duet ‘Space Invades My Mind’, which Maja recorded together with Veronica Maggio last year.
‘Come Companion’ is followed in the playlist by ‘Conqueror’ from Norwegian songstress Aurora. Last year saw Aurora rise to the forefront with the release of her Running With The Wolves EP, before her cover of Noel Gallagher’s ‘Half The World Away’ became the soundtrack to the legendary John Lewis Christmas ad in the UK.
Her exceptional journey was recognised officially last week, when she was awarded a prize at the European Border Breaker Awards in the Netherlands’ Eurosonic Festival and now she’s returned to unleash a brand new single entitled ‘Conqueror’. An outstanding example of Aurora’s characteristic vocal skills, the song proves to be one of her more catchy, up-tempo tracks, proving that she’s fast becoming and all round master of crafting perfect Nordic pop songs!
Among the Nordic pop tracks that are seriously blowing up on Spotify right now, we find ‘#FML’ from Sweden’s GMX & Jockiboi. In just a couple of days, the song has been streamed more than half a million times which can probably be partly credited to Jockiboi being one of Sweden’s most popular Youtubers. The duo continue to build on the success of their previous single from last year, ‘Snapchat’, with a track packed with tropical house, drops, hashtags and a phrase most people (unfortunately) can relate to – what’s could be more ‘2016’?
Fans of Nordic – and especially Swedish – pop who followed the P3 Guld Awards last Saturday might recognise a few artists in our playlist who were also highlighted during the award gala. Little Jinder received the award for ‘Pop Artist of the Year’, and her new track ‘Super 8’ has been selected to appear on this week’s Trenda: New Nordic Pop playlist.
Little Jinder has been releasing music since 2008 and in 2013 she switched her songwriting language from English to her native Swedish. ‘Super 8’ is taken from the latest release Allting suger, an album packed with music floating somewhere between dreamy Scandinavian electronics and the honest confessions of Veronica Maggio.
The P3 Guld Awards ended with a performance from one of Sweden’s prominent dance producers, Otto Knows, appearing to perform the song ‘Dying For You’. The track was premiered last week and is (obviously) included in this week’s playlist. ‘Dying For You’ is the much anticipated follow up to the track ‘Next To Me’, a song that earned Otto Knows – or Otto Jettman – a Swedish Grammy nomination for ‘Best Song’.
