Slush

Slush Conference

As the Slush conference takes hold of Helsinki, the Finnish capital has become a focal point for innovative businesses. For people looking for good music though, the city is a gold mine all year round…

The Nordic countries are not only a breeding ground for great, innovative music, but also innovative ideas. After all, it would be hard to find all that great music without such original Nordic inventions as Soundcloud or Spotify. As the Nordics’ creative entrepreneurs zoom to Slush – an enormous conference which brings together tech talent and media for a two day melting pot event in Helsinki – the eyes of the Nordic Playlist fall on all the great music that has sprung out of the city recently.

Tune in to a Nordic Playlist Spotify playlist with music from Helsinki!

To help you slip into the Helsinki-headspace a bit better, we’re presenting some picks and Nordic Playlist curators from Finland who can help to give you a taste of the city calling itself “the pearl of the Baltic sea”…

jaakko

Jaakko Eino Kalevi

After working as a tram driver criss-crossing around the city, Jaakko Eino Kalevi knows Helsinki like the back of his hand. To celebrate the release of his self-titled album, we invited Jaakko to present his very own Nordic Playlist, where he recommended tracks from Yung Lean, Kasper Bjørke and Arne Nordheim!

Katerina

One of Helsinki’s most exciting DJs, Katerina has made a name for herself throughout the city via her hyped residencies at renowned night spots Kaiku and Ääniwalli, and the artist is now working on a much anticipated first record full of original solo material. We caught up with Katerina earlier this year as she provided us with a specially made mixtape and some golden rules for DJing! Find the interview and DJ mix here

Eero Johannes

The Helsinki electronic music scene has been treated to the skwee-led sounds of Eero Johannes for a while, as the artist has worked on building a reputation as an exciting producer and DJ in and around his home town. We caught up with Eero himself for an interview and to record the track ‘HEYGURLGIMMEURURL’ at Roskilde Festival earlier this year. Iisa

The summer of 2015 was an extremely busy one for Helsinki-based artist Iisa, who not only released her sophomore album Kukaan ei oo kenenkään, but also appeared at Flow Festival for a special one off performance to mark the tenth anniversary of her band Regina. To find out more about this artists influences and inspirations, we invited Iisa to make her own Nordic Playlist, in which she recommended the likes of Susanne Sundfør, Ane Brun and Lasten hautausmaa and Teksti-TV 666 from her native Finland.

Noah Kin

It’s safe to say that hip-hop artist Noah Kin is one of the brightest shining stars on the Helsinki hip-hop scene right now, where he’s already released a handful of albums and has collaborated with some of the city’s more prestigious emerging acts. Ahead of his appearance at this year’s Berlin Festival, Noah played a very special, intimate show at the Nordic Playlist Radio Bar, which included the yet unreleased collaboration with Denmark’s Sekuoia ‘Are You Happy Now’. Noah is also performing during Slush, at the Kaiku venue.

During the Slush after parties, the Helsinki music scene will show off its best side. Artists performing on day one are, among others, house and disco DJ/producer Roberto Rodriguez, Herkules and Skeenikswee & OttoPetteri. On the closing day. Jussi Ylikoski of Disco Ensemble will perform with his side project Big Pharma.
