When is a cover not a cover? Perhaps when it’s such a drastic departure from the original that it feels like something entirely new? Though Billy Joel‘s ‘Just The Way You Are’ has undoubtedly been covered on a number of occasions over the years, we’re pretty sure it’s never sounded quite like this.
We’re delighted to bring you the UK Premiere of Swedish newcomer Maja Francis‘ remarkable reworking of the song. Starting with her striking soprano and murky, atmospheric synths, you’d be forgiven for not even realising this was a cover until that nostalgic melody hits. The song is transformed – not a whisper of the comfortable, coffee table MOR of the original remains, replaced instead by Francis’ distinctive vocal and swirling, arpeggiating synths. This song no longer feels like fodder for the first dance at a wedding, but something to lose yourself to on a dancefloor at 1AM.
‘Just The Way You Are’ is a bonus treat from Maja Francis following her début track ‘Last Days Of Dancing’, released earlier this year via Sweden Music (home to the likes of Seinabo Sey), to tide us over until her next proper release in the autumn. Check it out below:
