Finland’s Siinai are no strangers to concept in music. From their debut LP Olympic Games, to their latest, Supermarket, billed as “a soundtrack for the supermarket nations”. So, the video for ‘Vasikka’, the latest track taken from Supermarket, uses this concept and has the band performing in one.
There’s something fantastically surreal seeing the band riff out their synth-fuelled take on desert blues psychedelia in front of racks of fabric softener, boxes of cereal and frozen peas, but the juxtaposition works – the mundane setting becomes fascinating because the music makes it so. In reality, the soundtrack for a supermarket nation is probably tinny instrumentals of 80s pop hits, but this is infinitely superior.
