Doe-eyed Bergen crooner Sondre Lerche has charmed listeners on both sides of the pond for over a decade now, with his distinctive brand of twitchy and chirpy indie-pop. But his seventh effort Please, due out on his own Mona Records this autumn, is being trumpeted as the laid-bare and desolate result of a painful divorce.

At first it doesn’t show – flagship single ‘Bad Law’ starts as sunnily as ever, the chiming guitars couldn’t be more wistfully upbeat, and Lerche is incapable of not singing with a smile. Beneath the brave face lies a bitter tale blending legalese and broken hearts, however: “When crimes are passionate can love be separate?”, is the repeated refrain, whilst in speciality Lerche fashion a burst of screeching discord repeatedly disrupts the cosmetic perfection and the model musical marriage is torn to shreds.
