There’s something about Iceland that draws in musicians from all over the world and inspires them to settle there, and in the case of Californian native Ryan Karazija, the chance to permanently relocate to Reykjavik three years ago was too good an opportunity to pass up. Performing under the moniker Low Roar, Karazija has been perfecting his delicate melodies and somehow manages to encapsulate the intimacies of Iceland’s primordial landscape through his carefully crafted songs.
Low Roar’s new single ‘I’m Leaving’, taken from the forthcoming self-titled album, is a spellbinding waltz, infused with heartbreaking sentiments of leaving behind something you hold dear in the knowledge you can never return. Karazija’s pitch perfect near-falsetto vocals resonate with the wistful synths and gently rolling beats to create a dense sonic tapestry that calls to mind the likes of Grizzly Bear and Bright Eyes. ‘I’m Leaving’ serves as a melancholy reflection on times past, but it also manages to be intensely uplifting at the same time.
