As beautiful as it is intricate, the latest offering from Norwegian DJ, songwriter and producer Todd Terje is a cover of Robert Palmer’s ‘Johnny and Mary.’
Featuring vocals from none other than Roxy Music legend Bryan Ferry, Terje’s version is a subtle mix of softly woven lyrics and synths, in contrast to Palmer’s fast-paced original. Ferry’s cool vocals are filled with earnest longing and soulfully tender lyrics, capturing the track’s sensuality and warmth, as he croons, “Johnny’s always running around, trying to find certainty / He needs all the world to confirm that he ain’t lonely.”
Terje’s take on Palmer’s original evokes nostalgic dreaminess, a nod to smooth 80s pop and a track revealing his artistic versatility, not only presenting fun space disco in his previous single ‘Delorean Dynamite,’ but also showing us how well he can create gentle, layered wistful music, such as that found on this current single.
Terje’s debut album It’s Album Time is out on the 8th April and you can hear his full album via The Guardian now.
