If you haven’t heard of Just Another Snake Cult, don’t get embarrassed, but press play before you forget. Þórir “Thor” Bogason’s pop project began in California, where he grew up, but after returning to Iceland its reputation has grown steadily with a series of tantalizingly limited edition releases on a variety of formats.
This isn’t the only reason his audience is kept wanting more. His low-fidelity arrangements have been compared to Brian Wilson by The Line of Best Fit, and while we tend to judge that kind of fanfare as a priori hyperbole, the claim has some weight to it. The murky warmth of JASC’s production is constantly imaginative. Every song seems to evolve by somersaulting, and it’s only once your little pop-loving heart is dancing that you notice the mild psychotic edge, and get a sense of something foreboding hiding away deep within. And that’s The Beach Boys through and through. Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older? Yeah sure, but we’re not.
If you’re going to Iceland Airwaves this year, you can catch Thor and his latest ensemble there.
